How It Works
Three capability layers, only the first in build today.
NöroKalkan doesn’t load everything onto the user’s will; it tries to put distance between trigger and action with small tools you open yourself, in the moment of an urge. Not a new treatment method — an app, in the person’s own language, that brings together tools that already exist. The second and third layers are a "if we can" intention, not a commitment.
Core Principle
Every step is yours; none of it happens by itself.
The system never diagnoses, classifies risk, routes anyone anywhere, or moves anyone to a next step automatically. The waiting and friction settings you configure don’t lift the moment you ask — loosening them is a separate, deliberate step; that is exactly what helps you keep the promise you made yourself. If crisis language is detected, a fixed helpline is shown; the decision is yours.
"We can’t force a formula for recovery on anyone. What we can do is bring the tools together and build something worth trying."FOUNDER’S NOTE
Layers
Three layers, in order.
NöroKalkan is in development. The description below is how the app is intended to work; no tool switches itself on — you open every one of them.
Layer · Core
The app — in build todayMechanism and Awareness
Content explaining how digital gambling products are designed to trigger you — from the same vein as the narrative in the books. The aim isn’t to frighten you; it’s so you can see the mechanism clearly.
Urge-Moment Exercises
Three short, digital-gambling-specific exercises you open in sequence or on their own, whenever you choose: the Pattern Illusion Breaker (cuts the “it’s my turn to win” feeling), the Self-Deception Filter (catches the “I’m just researching” rationalisation), and the Reality Anchor (recalls the “heaviest cost” moment you recorded yourself — because this is a heavy technique, it tells you what it will do first and asks for your explicit consent). Field finding, not a guarantee: with the right friction, the urge wave usually passes within minutes.
A Waiting Delay and a Free Journal
Waiting periods that switch on when you turn them on; and a free-writing journal of your own — when you read it back, you get a short, boundary-setting but empathetic response. Instead of counting days, it shows you the pattern you recorded yourself. If you want, you can talk to a chat inside the app too; it never diagnoses and never routes you anywhere automatically.
Layer · Financial Friction
If we canControl via Bank-Side Friction
Using the friction and restriction mechanisms banks already offer (spending limits, category blocks, approval delays, account separation) to make it harder, on your own decision, to reach money in the moment of an urge. The app connects the mechanism; it doesn’t decide for you and doesn’t watch you. It comes if we can manage it technically and institutionally.
Layer · Access Blocking
If we canAccess Blocking via VPN / DNS
At the VPN or DNS level, a block you set up yourself that restricts access to gambling sites and apps. The Gamban / BetBlocker idea — but in your own language, under one roof, and in the same place as the two layers above. The most uncertain layer; only if we can pull it off.
Prying the door open
The general shape of getting free — and the slice we attempt.
Breaking free of this structure usually takes four things at once. NöroKalkan doesn’t do all of them; it focuses mainly on the first layer, then — if we can — on the other two.
Financial isolation
Handing control of cash, credit cards and digital banking to a trusted person, or restrictions you set up yourself.
Device and network blocking
Gambling-blocking protocols at the device or DNS level — Gamban, Cold Turkey, or similar.
90 days of full disconnection
At least 90 days of unbroken time off so dopamine receptors desensitised to uncertain reward can recover.
Professional support
Rebuilding impulse-control mechanisms with an addiction specialist or a helpline.
On the same side
Not instead of what exists — alongside it.
Useful tools already exist in this space: blockers like Gamban and BetBlocker, focus apps like Freedom, forums, helplines, therapists. Each holds one side of the problem, and each is valuable. NöroKalkan isn’t trying to replace them; it’s only trying to gather a few pieces — content explaining the mechanism, urge-moment exercises, and later bank-side friction and access blocking — in one place, in the person’s own language. We’re not inventing a new clinical method. We want to stand on common ground with the tools and the people working on the same problem, and to complement one another.
"We can’t solve this alone. If we can build common ground with everyone working on the same problem, all of us have a better chance."FOUNDER’S NOTE
Measurement
The effect hasn’t been measured yet; we aim to measure it and share it.
A gambling urge, left unfed, usually rises, crests and passes within 15–30 minutes. The first layer’s intent is to have something within reach in exactly those minutes. But whether that helps isn’t a claim; the app asks how strong the urge is at the start and at the end, and keeps that data on your device only. Once enough use has built up, we aim to share the result honestly — whether it helps or not.
This isn’t a treatment ladder. The layers can be used in order or skipped around in; none is mandatory.
A common thought
"I can just ask an AI."
True — and talking to an AI genuinely helps. The difference: a general chatbot doesn’t know you, your history, or this urge; the chat inside the app knows the urge records and the settings you configured, which sit in the same place.
Starting it
A conversationNotice you feel bad, decide to ask for help, open the app, explain the whole situation. The urge can win at any of these steps.
This appOpens in one tap; because it already knows the history on your device, you don’t have to explain the situation from scratch.
Knowing you
A conversationStarts from zero every time. How many urges today, what you promised last week, your "I’m just checking the odds" line — it doesn’t know.
This appCarries the records you keep on your device and the promises you made yourself; it can say "you said the same thing on Tuesday".
Acting, not just talking
A conversationCan only produce text.
This appIn the same place, one tap from the waiting delay you set up and the urge-moment exercises.
Not folding
A conversationIf you push, it usually helps you anyway — argue that "one more bet is rational" and it will help you plan the budget.
This appThe waiting delay you set up doesn’t loosen on its own, even when you’re the one asking in the moment. Loosening it is a separate, slow, deliberate step.
An AI is a good conversation. This is a tool we’re trying to bring together in one place — and that conversation lives inside it.
